Salim Akil is an American writer, director, and producer. He is best known for Being Mary Jane, Girlfriends, and The Game.

Biography[]

Salim was born on June 22, 1964 in Oakland, CA. He raised in Richmond, CA for most of his life. He attended Columbia college in Los Angeles where he studied film and television production.

Akil started his entertainment career with the 1998 independent feature film “Drylongso,” which he co-wrote and co-produced with Cauleen Smith on a budget of just $25,000. Featured in the 1999 Sundance and Berlin film festivals, “Drylongso” won the Grand Jury Prize at the Urbanworld Film Festival. He would go on to direct the long-running series “Girlfriends,” including the two-part series finale, as well as episodes of “The Game,” a comedy about wives and girlfriends of professional football players. He co-wrote and directed “The Game” finale with his wife, Mara Brock Akil.

He currently resides in Los Angeles, California with his wife and two sons.
